Writer’s Statement

Michael Charron

The idea for "Last Chance" came when a friend and I were laughing about movies where a bunch of guys make a pact to lose their virginity, like "American Pie", and we started wondering how pathetic we could make that premise.

Our answer was two guys in their thirties going to their fifteen-year high school reunion and deciding that this is it. This is finally the weekend they're going to lose their virginity.

But the story I ended up writing wasn't really those movies.

It's about two awkward best friends who have never quite figured out how to make it in the world. Levi is determined to become an actor, but the biggest thing he's ever accomplished is becoming a meme because of a terrible commercial he made in his early twenties. Ricky works as a designer for a video game company but secretly wants to be a dancer. The problem is he's terrified to dance in front of anyone.

They're embarrassed by where they are in life. They're convinced everyone else figured out some secret to being an adult that they somehow missed. And through all of it, the one thing they've always had is each other.

Well, each other and Brooke.

Brooke is their roommate, friend, occasional coach, and the person who probably understands them better than anyone. She's trying to teach them that talking to women isn't some elaborate game and confidence isn't about having the right line or knowing some secret trick. It's about being willing to put yourself out there.

And then there's Chester, the guy they've spent years wishing they could be. He's confident, great with women, and everything these two awkward virgins think a man is supposed to be. But over the course of the weekend, they begin to realize that the guy they spent years wishing they could become isn't somebody they actually want to be at all.

In fact, Chester is kind of pathetic.

So "Last Chance" became a story about two guys realizing that maybe the problem isn't that they failed to become the people they were supposed to be. Maybe the problem is believing there was ever a person they were supposed to be in the first place.

You don't have to become what everyone else expects you to be. You don't have to hit the milestones you're supposed to hit when you're supposed to hit them. It's okay to be awkward. It's okay to be weird. It's okay to want something that scares the hell out of you.

It's okay to be yourself.

Actually, it's better than okay. Being yourself is the best version of you that you can possibly be.

Even if you're still a virgin at 33.
